Battle at the Box Office 2/13
It was a busy weekend at the box office with four new movies and a lot of couples heading out to celebrate Valentine’s Day early with The Vow, which took the top spot at the box office with $41.7 million. It’s the third highest romantic movie opening of all time and the sixth best February opening. Safe House came in second place with $39.3 million, the second highest opening for Denzel Washington behind American Gangster. Battling for 3D screens were Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and the re-release of The Phantom Menace and Journey 2 managed to edge out the third place spot with $27.5 million while Episode 1 took in $23 million. Journey 2 squashed it’s predecessor by $6 million and seems to prove that The Rock is able to save any ailing franchise, which he’ll hopefully do this summer with GI Joe: Retaliation. Chronicle rounded out the top 5. All the other movies got shoved down 4 or 5 spots to accommodate the new releases with Underworld and Man on a Ledge falling the farthest.
