Battle at the Box Office 5/7
I think everyone knew The Avengers was going to be big but it’s still crazy just how big it was. Breaking pretty much ever record except best opening day, The Avengers made a whopping $200 million over the weekend, making it the best opening weekend ever, the highest Saturday take ever, the highest Sunday take ever, the fastest to $100, $150 and $200 million and the highest per theater average ever. Combined with it’s international gross, The Avengers is already hovering around half a billion. If you weren’t The Avengers this weekend, you pretty much made no money. I don’t think the top 100 combined would be enough to match The Avengers. Think Like a Man, The Hunger Games, The Lucky One and The Pirates: Band of Misfits rounded out the top 5. Dark Shadows is the only major competition this weekend for The Avengers but I would wager that Avengers will stay on top just because it was more widespread appeal, although, Alice in Wonderland, for how mediocre that was, still made $1 billion so it could go either way.
