Battle at the Box Office 4/1

gi-joe-retaliation-1

After getting delayed from last Summer, GI Joe: Retaliation finally came out and it’s gamble on 3D conversion and shooting additional scenes seems to have payed off.  The movie made $41.2 million, plus an additional $10.5 million on Thursday night early screens, so $50.7 million total.  It’s one of the top openings for each of it’s stars and only a few million off from the original GI Joe.  The Croods dropped down to second with another $26 million.  Tyler Perry’s Temptation took the third place spot with $22.3 million, one of the better Tyler Perry openings and his ninth, over $20 million opening.  Olympus Has Fallen and Oz the Great and Powerful rounded out the top 5.  The Host had a pretty disastrous opening with $11 million and sixth place.  It’s nowhere near the ballpark of the Twilight movies and more on par with knock offs like Beautiful Creatures.  In four theaters, The Place Beyond the Pines had a very solid $270,000 opening, which translates to about $67,000 per theater.
