Battle at the Box Office 6/3
Even though it fell over 65% from last weekend, Fast & Furious 6 still remained on top of the box office over the weekend with another $34.5 million, putting it just over $170 million. In a surprisingly close second was the magic heist movie, Now You See Me, which made $28 million. After Earth made $27 million on a $130 million budget, putting it in the company of movies like Battleship and John Carter and probably proving definitively that M. Night Shyamalan is box office poison at this point, especially when he had Will and Jaden Smith as his stars. At the time of this post, Star Trek Into Darkness and Epic were tied for fourth place with $16.4 million, but one may inch ahead when the actually numbers come out tonight. The Hangover Part III crashed and burned in it’s second week, going from second to sixth with just another $15.9 million, way off from where Part II was at the same time. The only other big surprise was the Bollywood movie, Yei Jawaani Hai Deewani, which made $1.6 million in 161 theaters, putting it ahead of the indie Matthew McCoughney movie, Mud, which was in 581 theaters and took tenth place.
