Battle at the Box Office 9/2
Considering it’s the end of Summer and there was basically no competition, One Direction: This is Us took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $17 million. It’s decent for a concert movie, better than Katy Perry, Glee and the Jonas Brothers disastrous openings but it was completely front loaded, so it will probably see a huge drop this coming weekend, especially with school starting for it’s tween girl audience. The Butler dropped down to second with $14.7 million, putting it just over $74 million in total. We’re the Millers continued it’s strong run with another $12.6 million and it’s now made over $100 million. Planes took fourth with $7.8 million. Completely out of nowhere, Spanish dramedy Instructions Not Included made $7.5 million in just 347 theaters. It’s from the same studio who put out No Eres Tu, Soy Yo, which also had a shockingly good opening out nowhere. The other two new movies were, not surprisingly, bombs. Getaway, which just barely escaped a 0% from Rotten Tomatoes, made only $4.5 million over the weekend, good for ninth place. Closed Circuit didn’t even make it into the top ten, making $3.06 million since it came out last Wednesday. It was only in 870 theaters but that’s still not great and people are not quite in the mood for a slow burn legal thriller, which it looked like Closed Circuit was.
