Battle at the Box Office 9/30
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 took the top spot at the box office this weekend, most likely because it didn’t really have any competition and it’s been at least a month since a big family animated movie came out. The movie took in $35 million, slightly better than the original’s debut of $30.3 million. This time last year, Hotel Transylvania came out and set a new September record, so this definitely wasn’t as big as that but it was still the fourth best all time debut for September. Prisoners dropped to second with $11.2 million and dropped almost half from it’s number one weekend last week. Expanding, Rush took third, coming from 38th last week, with $10.3 million. It’s a little low for a sports drama but Formula One isn’t exactly as interesting to Americans as say, baseball or football. Baggage Claim took fourth with $9.3 million, just edging out Don Jon, which took fifth with $9 million. Battle of the Year nose dived going from fifth to twelfth in it’s second weekend, solidifying it as a bomb.
