Battle at the Box Office 10/28
Gravity finally lost it’s top spot to kind of it’s polar opposite, the latest Jackass movie. Bad Grandpa took in $32 million over the weekend, the second best opening in the series behind Jackass 3D. Along with horror, R rated comedy has been one of the strongest genres this year, with five opening over $30 million. Gravity fell to second with another $20 million, putting it just shy of $200 million in total. Captain Phillips took third with another $11.8 million. The Counselor, which seemed like a sure bet on paper, opened below $10 million with $8 million. It’s one of the lowest openings for Ridley Scott. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 rounded out the top 5 with another $6.1 million. The critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave expanded it’s run to 123 theaters and managed to take in $2.1 million and eighth place. There’s potentially back to back to back blockbusters coming up this month with Ender’s Game, Thor: The Dark World and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, so expect some of the middling movies to get pushed out of the top 10.
