Battle at the Box Office 9/15

NO-GOOD-DEED

Guardians of the Galaxy finally yielded the top spot at the box office after five weeks to the Idris Elba/Taraji P. Henson home invasion thriller, No Good Deed.  No Good Deed made $24.5 million, the first new release to top $20 million since TMNT, which puts it up on similar recent releases like Halle Berry’s The Call, which made $17.1 million it’s opening weekend.

Dolphin Tale 2 took second with $16.5 million, down about $3 million from the first movie’s opening, which was also in 3D while the sequel is not.  There’s not a lot of family movies out right now, so it should stick around at least till The Boxtrolls hits at the end of the month.

Guardians of the Galaxy dropped down to third but it’s now crossed over $300 million domestic box office and $600 million worldwide, making it one of the best performing Marvel movies ever and I think guaranteeing we’re going to see plenty more of the Guardians in the future.

TMNT and Let’s Be Cops rounded out the top 5 with $4.8 and $4.3 million respectively.

In a slightly below wide release this weekend, Tom Hardy’s The Drop made $4.2 million in about 800 theaters.  It will expand to over 1,000 theaters this coming weekend.

This coming Friday is pretty jam packed, so there could be some big shuffling of the top 10 next weekend.
