Battle at the Box Office 9/29
With Denzel firmly in bad ass mode this weekend, The Equalizer took the top spot at the box office with one of the highest September openings of all time. The Equalizer took in about $35 million, the third highest ever opening for Denzel behind American Gangster and Safe House and the highest opening ever for director Antoine Fuqua. Overall, The Equalizer is the fourth highest September opening of all time.
The Maze Runner dropped to second with another $17.5 million, a drop of less than 50% from last weekend, which is better than most of the recent YA action/adventure franchises. It’s made $58 million total for it’s two weekends out.
The Boxtrolls took third with $17.3 million, the best opening so far for Laika and the second highest stop motion animated opening of all time, behind Corpse Bride.
This is Where I Leave You and Dolphin Tale 2 rounded out the top 5, with the latter trailing even further behind it’s predecessor.
A Walk Among the Tombstones took a big hit from The Equalizer this weekend and dropped to seventh with another $4.2 million. Most people were probably going in expecting a Liam Neeson actionfest instead of the old school mystery it actually was.
