Battle at the Box Office 10/27

Whether because it’s close to Halloween, teenagers being stupid or both, Ouija was the number one movie at the box office this weekend with $20 million, besting other recent horror openings like Sinister, Carrie and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and it’s the second highest horror opening of the year.  Hasbro is probably scrambling to find another board game they can turn into a shitty horror movie as we speak.

John Wick took second with a decent but not great $14 million, although it’s extremely close to The Expendables 3 opening weekend and topped both 3 Days to Kill and A Walk Among the Tombstones.  It’s in the top 10 for Keanu Reeves’ openings, just between Speed and The Lake House.

Fury dropped to third with another $13 million, a little under 50% drop from last weekend’s number 1 opening.  It’s made just over $46 million for it’s two weeks out.

Gone Girl and Book of Life rounded out the top 5 with the former on track to become David Fincher’s highest grossing movie.

Bill Murray’s St. Vincent expanded wide this weekend and took sixth with $8 million.

The Best of Me, The Judge and Dracula Untold are all quickly fading from the top 10, with Best of Me tanking the most, starting in fifth and dropping to eighth this weekend.

The horror movies should get a slight bump this coming weekend, as Halloween is Friday.
