Battle at the Box Office 6/1
The Rock had his best solo opening ever with San Andreas, which easily took the number one spot with $53 million. It’s also a huge step up from the last collaboration between director Brad Peyton and The Rock, which was Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which made $27 million in it’s opening weekend.
Last week’s number 1, Tomorrowland, took a big tumble, dropping almost 60% from last weekend and going down to third with $13.8 million. It’s word of mouth is not great and it cost a ridiculous $190 million to make, so it’s probably going to end up being a pretty huge disaster for Disney.
Pitch Perfect remained in second with another $14.4 million, putting it over $147 million for it’s three weeks out.
Mad Max and Avengers rounded out the top 5 with the latter becoming the sixth highest grossing movie of all time.
Cameron Crowe’s latest, Aloha, came into the weekend with some pretty toxic reviews and audiences seemed to listen, as it came in sixth place with $10 million, barely above Crowe’s last bomb, We Bought a Zoo.
Poltergeist also took a massive tumble this past weekend, going from fourth to seventh with an almost 70% drop from last week.
