Battle at the Box Office 8/3
After Edge of Tomorrow was awesome but performed poorly last summer, Tom Cruise is back to peak movie star power with the latest Mission Impossible, which easily took the top spot at the box office with $56 million. It’s the third best opening ever for Cruise and the second best in MI series, trailing MI:2’s $57 million opening back in 2000.
Vacation took the second spot but was way off of early predictions that it would make between $25-$30 million but it made just shy of $15 million, although it only cost $21 million, so it probably won’t be a total disaster.
Ant-Man dropped to third with almost a 50% drop off from last week’s 2nd #1 weekend. It made another $12.6 million and it’s made $132 million so far.
Minions and Pixels rounded out the top 5, with the latter continuing to bomb with $10.4 million in it’s second week and dropping almost 60% from last week’s weak opening.
Further down the list, both Southpaw and Paper Towns took massive tumbles in their second week, with Paper Towns dropping almost 65% from last week and went to eighth, while Southpaw went from fifth to seventh.
