Battle at the Box Office 2/22
Deadpool dominated for another weekend at the box office, quickly on the way to becoming one of the highest grossing R rated movies of all time.
Deadpool made another $56 million, putting it just over $236 million domestically, making it the highest grossing movie in the X-Men franchise. Worldwide, it’s made over $493 million and it’s currently the sixth highest grossing R rated movie of all time. Passion of the Christ is currently the highest grossing R rated film with just over $370 million.
Kung Fu Panda 3 held onto second place with another $12.5 million and it’s made $114 million so far but is still in third compared to the other two Kung Fu Panda movies.
Risen took third with $11.8 million, the seventh best opening for a Christian targeted movie and better than most of last year’s Christian movies. It probably helped that it seemed like it had an actual story instead of just preaching to the choir to draw in some audience outside the flock.
The Witch took fourth with $8.8 million, the best opening ever for young distributor A24, although it’s also their widest first opening weekend ever as well, with the closest wide release being Tusk’s 602 million. It’s currently already the fourth highest of all time for A24, with Ex Machina being their biggest release with $25.4 million.
How to Be Single rounded out the top 5 with another $8.2 million.
Race took in a slightly mediocre $7.3 million, putting it somewhere between We Are Marshall and McFarland, USA as far as similar movies go.
Further down the list, Zoolander 2 took a pretty massive tumble in it’s second week, going from fourth to seventh with $5.4 million. Considering how terrible reviews were, with Leonard Maltin even walking out mid-movie, it will probably fall of the top ten pretty quick.
