Battle at the Box Office 11/7
Doctor Strange easily dominated the box office to kick off November with $84.9 million, the second highest opening for an MCU movie introducing a character behind Iron Man and the tenth best opening overall for the MCU. It’s also made over $240.7 million worldwide, putting it just over $325 million total already. It’s also the best ever opening for Benedict Cumberbatch ahead of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Trolls took second with $45.6 million, putting it between Megamind and How to Train Your Dragon at number 14 for Dreamworks animation and it’s made over $104 million worldwide and it doesn’t really have any direct competition until the end of the month when Disney’s Moana comes out, so Trolls should stick around for a while.
The last of the new releases, Hacksaw Ridge, took third place with $14.7 million, the third best opening for Mel Gibson directing and it’s the 12th best opening for a World War II movie behind Australia and ahead of Windtalkers.
Boo! A Madea Halloween and Inferno rounded out the top 5, with the former dropping 55% from last week, most likely because the holiday in the title is in the rearview.
The only other big movement further down the chart was indie drama Moonlight getting more theaters and making $1.3 million in 83 theaters and moving from 16th to 11th.
