Battle at the Box Office 11/14
Doctor Strange easily held onto the top of the box office with another $43 million, putting it over $153 million in just it’s 10 days out and it’s made almost half a billion already worldwide. As far as the MCU, it’s currently 11th overall worldwide behind Ant-Man. It also had the second lowest drop off from the previous weekend for the MCU. Disney has had it’s highest grossing year ever in 2016 with $2.3 billion worldwide from all it’s releases so far and Moana and Rogue One are still on the way to put them further over the top.
Trolls held onto the number 2 spot and only fell 24% from last weekend, making another $35 million and putting it over $94 million for it’s two weeks out. It’s already made more than Storks did in it’s entire run earlier in the fall and could surpass Angry Birds in the next week or so.
Arrival did the best of the new releases with $24 million and took third place. It’s the best opening for director Denis Villeneuve, surpassing Prisoners’ $20 million in 2013.
Almost Christmas took fourth place with $15.5 million, the 17th best opening for a Christmas based movie. Audiences gave it a favorable ranking and it’s the only holiday based comedy until the first week of December with Office Christmas Party, so it could hang around for a bit.
Hacksaw Ridge rounded out the top 5, making another $10.8 million but dropping from third to fifth.
Further down the charts, Shut In had a pretty terrible opening with $3.7 million, one of the lowest horror openings of the year and especially bad compared to Ouija’s $14 million a few weeks ago.
