Battle at the Box Office 7/3
Despicable Me 3 took the top spot at the box office, as expected, but it didn’t explode out of the gate like most analysts were thinking. The movie made $75 .4 million, which is below both Minions and Despicable Me 3’s openings and about $10 million less than the studio’s predictions. It also opened in the most theaters ever with 4,529, so the fact that it didn’t make tons more money may be proof that people are finally getting tired of Gru and the Minions. Worldwide, the movie brought in $116 million, bringing it’s grand total to over $192 million.
In excellent news, Baby Driver outperformed expectations and gave Edgar Wright his biggest opening ever with $30 million for it’s five days out. It has critical and audience buzz as well so it should hopefully hold well in the next few weeks.
Transformers: The Last Knight fell 62% from last week, making another $17 million, bringing it to just over $102 million and over $327 million worldwide but it’s at least $80 million off from where Age of Extinction was at the same time frame.
Wonder Woman and Cars 3 rounded out the top 5, with Wonder Woman now definitively the highest grossing DCEU movie domestically with $346 million.
The House bombed with only $9 million, which is the worst wide release opening for Will Ferrell as the star and one of the lowest comedy openings of the year.
Moving into the top 10 from a wider release, The Beguiled took 8th place with $3.3 million in 674 theaters while just outside The Big Sick also opened slightly wider into 71 theaters and took $1.6 million for 12th place.
