Battle at the Box Office 10/30
The return of Jigsaw managed to top the pre-Halloween weekend but it was one of the lowest openings for the francise.
Jigsaw took in $16.3 miilion, which only puts it above Saw VI as far as openings and even the original Saw managed to beat it by $2 million. Jigsaw only cost about $10 million to make though, so it will at least double it’s budget despite probably taking a gigantic nosedive against Thor: Ragnorak this coming weekend. Worldwide, Jigsaw took in an additional $9.5 million, bringing it’s grand total to over $25.7 million.
Boo 2! dropped to second with $10 million, bringing it up to over $35.5 million for it’s two weeks out.
Geostorm, Happy Death Day and Blade Runner 2049 all slid down one slot from last weekend to round out the top 5.
Thank You For Your Service opened to sixth place with $3.7 million, which is pretty low, even below the similarly themed military drama Megan Leavey that opened in June of this year with $3.8 million.
Bombing in ninth place was Suburbicon, easily director George Clooney’s worst wide opening by over $8 million and the limited audience that saw it also rejected it as well with a D- from Cinemascore.
Before it’s big debut here, Thor: Ragnorak opened in 36 markets and has already made over $107.6 million.
In bizarre box office news, Amityville: The Awakening opened for one showing on Saturday in 10 theaters across the country and made $742 or $74 per theater. What’s even stranger than the one day, one show strategy is that the movie was available to own forever, for free, on the Google Play store last week.
