In their assignments set in 1956, the Burea for Paranormal Research and Defense is tasked with investigating suspicious activity in Mexico. Reports of strange creatures, demonic possessions, and dark rituals all point to a mysterious element that requires the B.P.R.D. to stop it. Hellboy and two recently promoted trainees head off to Mexico, while Professor Bruttenholm heads to the CIA headquarters to discuss the presence of Enkeladite, a substance that can alter matter into dramatic powerful and unpredicted forms. However, Bruttenholm’s concerns are met resistance and the CIA is demanding the B.P.R.D. to focus on the Soviet’s rising occult activity. While the Soviet mission takes priority, Bruttenholm suspects a cover-up that will be a far greater problem for the world.
Issue one picks up only a few months after the events of B.P.R.D investigation in the South Pacific and Port Orange, Florida, where the B.P.R.D were finding strange sightings that point to horrific experiments that involved Enkeladite. Professor Bruttenholm follows a trail of clues that may involve the CIA and other organizations, but he cannot piece together the evidence just yet. Meanwhile, Hellboy is taking a greater role as he takes two trainees on their first mission. Hellboy has gained enough experience to lead his own team, but something is occupying his mind. Any small distractions can quickly become deadly in the B.P.R.D, and Hellboy must keep focus to do his job right.
