Battle at the Box Office 2/25
While most eyes were on the Oscars over the weekend, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World took the top at the box office, closing out the series with a franchise high opening.
How to Train Your Dragon 3 took in $55.5 million, which is the biggest opening of the year so far and topping HTTYD 2 by $6 million. It’s also the 8th best opening for Dreamworks Animation between Monsters vs Aliens and Home. The movie has been out internationally for weeks and has racked up a global total of $274.9 million.
Alita: Battle Angel dropped to second with $12 million, down 57.9% from last week’s #1 opening. It opened in China to a #1 opening in that market with $62.2 million and it’s made a total of $263 million so far but needs probably at least around $500 million worldwide to break even.
The Lego Movie 2 was third place with $10 million. It has made $83.6 million so far, which is a massive $50 million off from where The Lego Batman Movie was in the same time frame. Its worldwide total is $136 million.
Fighting With My Family made it’s wide debut and took in $8 million, which is on the low end of expectations. It garnered great reviews and has an A- from Cinemascore, so it might be a word of mouth movie that either builds or maintains over the next few weeks.
Isn’t It Romantic rounded out the top 5 with another $7.5 million, bringing it to $33.7 million for two weeks out.
Christian focused Run the Race found itself in the top 10 at #10 with $2.3 million in only 853 theaters. That puts it slightly ahead of last year’s Unbroken: Road to Redemption, which was in double the number of theaters.
The Per Theater average went to How to Train Your Dragon 3, which took in $13,038 in each of its 4,259 theaters but second place was CatVideoFest 2019, a compilation of internet cat videos, took in $7,530 in 2 theaters and it seems to be a traveling show that will be in my neck of the woods in March.
