Musical Montage: Ol’ Dirty Bastard ft. Kelis “Got Your Money”
Before Eddie Murphy and Michael Jai White were paying homage to Rudy Ray Moore and Blaxploitation, Wu-Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard used the over the top greatness of Dolemite for the video for his song “Got Your Money”. Coming off his second solo album Nigga Please, both the album and the single were released in August 1999, with the album debuting at #10 on the Billboard charts. The song was also the debut for R&B singer Kelis, who provides the chorus of the song and is the only one who appears in new footage in the music video. Any footage of ODB was from the 1995 video for “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and all the rest of the footage is taken from the 1975 classic Dolemite, complete with time to drop the music and hear some of Rudy Ray Moore’s immortal quotes. Pitchfork ranked the “Got Your Money” video as the 47th best video of the 90s on their Top 50 list. Check it out below.
