Musical Montage: Bill Medley “Friday Night’s A Great Night for Football”
Kicking off (and closing out) Tony Scott’s 1991 action movie The Last Boy Scout, “Friday Night’s A Great Night for Football” was a clear send-up of “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight”, which Hank Williams Jr. performed for Monday Night Football starting in 1989. The Last Boy Scout was about corrupt football owners and had Damon Wayans’ quarterback James “Jimmy” Dix teaming up with private investigator Joe Hallenbeck, played by Bruce Willis. The in-universe football broadcasts for teams like the LA Stallions needed a theme song, which was where Bill Medley came in. Medley was one half of The Righteous Brothers and was no stranger to movie songs, having previously performed “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” for Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Warnes and “Most of All You” from Major League and his “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” was used memorably in Top Gun. There was unfortunately no football-themed music video for “Friday Night’s A Great Night for Football” but you can check out the song below.
