Everything Action Theater: Godzilla (1998)
If you were around our age in 1998, you remember the hype was out of control for Roland Emmerich’s version of Godzilla. From Taco Bell tie-ins, to the toys, to the still memorable soundtrack, Godzilla was primed to be the movie event of 1998. When the movie opened, reviews were negative from both critics and hardcore Godzilla fans and, despite making over $379 million worldwide, the movie was considered a financial disappointment as well. Being 12 years old when it came out, I still have a soft spot for the big iguana, Matthew Broderick as the unlikeliest action hero, and also the casting of basically the entire cast of The Simpsons in side roles. The movie spawned an animated series that continued the story from the movie and also paid homage to some classic Godzilla movies and storylines and the home of Godzilla, Toho, featured “Zilla” in Godzilla: Final Wars, where he was promptly destroyed by the true Godzilla.
