Battle at the Box Office 3/27/23
John Wick stormed the box office with Chapter 4 of the action movie franchise scoring the biggest opening in the series and one of the biggest openings in recent memory for Lionsgate.
John Wick Chapter 4 opened to $73.8 million domestically and $137.8 million worldwide. Every movie in the John Wick series has topped the opening of the previous entry, the sign of a truly strong franchise at the box office, and Chapter 4 topped Chapter 3’s opening by $17 million. John Wick Chapter 4 is the best opening for Lionsgate since The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and the fifth-best opening in Lionsgate history. The movie got an A CinemaScore so that, combined with the critical response, should keep the word of mouth and box office performance high going into this coming weekend.
Not having as great of a box office was Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which nosedived into second place with a loss of 69% from last weekend’s opening. Bringing in less than $10 million in its second weekend with $9.3 million, Fury of the Gods now has $45.9 million domestically and $101.7 million worldwide. The first Shazam! made over $24 million in its second weekend back in 2019 and also opened much higher than Fury of the Gods.
Creed III dropped to third place with $8.3 million, bringing it to $140.8 million domestically and $246.7 million worldwide. It has officially surpassed the original Rocky worldwide for unadjusted box office gross and is closing in on Rocky IV with only around $14 million separating them. Creed III is also the highest-grossing Rocky movie unadjusted for inflation domestically.
Scream VI and 65 rounded out the top 5 with the former at just under $90 million domestically for 3 weeks out and $139.2 million worldwide.
Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania dropped out of the top 5, only making another $2.4 million and bringing it to $209.8 million domestically and $464.8 million worldwide. It’s still $54 million away from topping the first Ant-Man film worldwide and it will probably be a struggle to get there, if it does. It’s currently between the first Ant-Man and Thor for the worldwide chart and between Ant-Man and The Wasp and Thor: The Dark World for the domestic chart.
John Wick Chapter 4 also took the Per Theater average with $19,149 in each of the 3,855 theaters it was playing in over the weekend.
