Musical Montage: Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora “When the Rain Begins to Fall”

Kicking off the insanity of the cult 80s musical comedy Voyage of the Rock Aliens, the movie’s star Pia Zadora joined Jermaine Jackson for “When the Rain Begins to Fall”.  Having basically nothing to do with the actual plot of the movie, the music video for “When the Rain Begins to Fall” is shoehorned in as a look at the planet Acriema, which the titular Rock Aliens dismiss on their quest to find the source of Rock and Roll in the universe.  Once on Earth, they find another version of Zadora, Dee Dee, and convince her to join their band in a battle of the bands with Dee Dee’s jealous boyfriend Frankie (Craig Sheffer) and his band, The Pack.  The single of “When the Rain Begins to Fall” released after the movie’s debut in March of 1984 and became a hit in Europe, hitting #1 in several countries, but not quite having the same success in the US except on the Billboard Dance Charts, where it hit #22.  Voyage of the Rock Aliens and “When the Rain Begins to Fall” are still being rediscovered today, with How Did This Get Made? covering the movie in one of their best episodes and the song getting a cover from PSY and Hwa Sa in 2022.  Check out the music video below.
