Everything Action Theater: Heathers

We’re diving into the cult classic Christian Slater movie Gleaming the Cube this week on the Everything Actioncast but 1989 featured another Slater movie that flopped on release but has since become a beloved cult classic, Heathers.  Released on March 31st, 1989 via Roger Corman’s New World Pictures (which was on the verge of bankruptcy), the movie stars Slater as Jason “JD” Dean, a misanthropic outside who teams up with disillusioned popular girl Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) to destroy the clique of popular girls, all named Heather, that run the school.  The movie received mixed reviews upon release but contemporary and retrospective reviews have labeled it a cult classic and a high water mark for dark comedies/satire. The movie has since spawned a musical stage adaptation and a short-lived TV series reboot on Paramount Network that was canceled after one season.  You can watch Heathers below, thanks to YouTube.
