Battle at the Box Office 1/22/24
With the only new wide release, ISS, being DOA this past weekend, Mean Girls remained on the top of the charts for a second weekend.
Mean Girls brought in another $11.6 million, dropping 59.6% from last weekend. That’s pretty steep for a musical and it might indicate that all of the people that went opening weekend and felt duped that it was a musical and not a straight remake of the original movie may be contributing to a slightly negative word of mouth. It currently has a 65% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Mean Girls has a domestic total so far of $50 million and a worldwide total of $66.2 million.
The Beekeeper remained in second with a pretty strong hold from last weekend, dropping 48% and making another $8.6 million. That brings it to $31.2 million domestically and $75.4 million worldwide. It’s currently outpacing Statham movies like Mechanic: Resurrection and Transporters 2 and 3, so it could potentially crack $100 million worldwide and it seems like there is a highly likely chance we’re going to get another insane entry in the Beekeeperverse.
Wonka continued its incredible run in theaters, dropping only 21% in its sixth weekend, making another $6.7 million and bringing its domestic total to $187.4 million and its worldwide total to $533.2 million worldwide. It has officially surpassed the Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory both domestically and worldwide.
Migration and Anyone But You also remained strong, dropping only 12% and 24% respectively, and flip-flopping spots from last weekend, putting Migration in 4th and Anyone But You going back to 5th. Migration has made $192 million worldwide while Anyone But You has made $100.1 million worldwide.
ISS debuted to a mediocre 7th place with $3 million. It’s the 20th worst opening for a movie in over 2,500 theaters between Big George Foreman and the terrible Liam Neeson thriller Memory. The movie got fairly decent reviews but the CinemScore was a terrible C-, which most likely we’ll see an insane drop this coming weekend and it will probably even be outside of the top 10 come next week.
Poor Things remained in 10th place and saw an increase in business of +19% with $2.1 million, bringing it to $20.4 million domestically. If it racks up some Oscar nominations this week, it may increase even more.
The Per Theater average went to Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, which made $7,411 in each of the 2 theaters it was playing in.
