Battle at the Box Office 1/29/24

After another slow weekend with no major releases, The Beekeeper managed to barely edge out Mean Girls in its third weekend of release, taking the top spot at the box office.

The Beekeeper took in another $7.4 million, bringing it to $42.2 million domestically and $86.4 million worldwide.  It will pass the domestic total and worldwide totals of Transporter 2 in Jason Statham’s catalog. It will need another $17 million or so to pass Wrath of Man and close in on Transporter 3 and Mechanic: Resurrection.  The movie only dropped 14% from last weekend.

Mean Girls dropped 37% from last weekend but was only $100,000 off from remaining on the top of the chart for a third weekend in a row with $7.3 million.  The movie now has $60.8 million domestically and $83.4 million worldwide.

Wonka stayed strong in third place, only dropping 16% from last weekend and making another $5.6 million.  It now has $194.9 million domestically and $552.2 million worldwide.  It is officially the 8th highest grossing movie of 2023 domestically, topping John Wick Chapter 4 and Sound of Freedom, and is $14 million away from entering the top 10 worldwide for 2023 by passing M:I Dead Reckoning’s $566 million.

Migration and Anyone But You rounded out the top 5, both dropping less than 20% from last weekend.  Migration now has over $100 million domestically while Anyone But You has $71 million domestically.

Indian action movie Fighter took 6th place with $3.6 million in 662 theaters and it has just over $5 million worldwide.  Poor Things and American Fiction saw massive expansions after the multiple Oscar nominations both films received last week and re-entered the top ten at 7th and 8th place.  Godzilla Minus One also re-entered the top 10 thanks to a “Minus Color” version and took 10th place with $2.7 million.  As expected, last week’s ISS fell out of the top 10 after only 1 week, dropping to 13th place with just $1.3 million.

The Per Theater average this weekend went to Sometimes I Think About Dying, an indie comedy starring Daisy Ridley, which made $20,230 in each of the 2 theaters it was playing in.
