Battle at the Box Office 2/12/24
The Super Bowl always leads to slow weekends in theaters but this year in particular was one of the worst weekends ever in recent memory at the box office.
Argylle stayed on top of the charts for a second weekend but only took in another $6.5 million, dropping 63% from last weekend. The movie has made $28.8 million domestically and $59.9 million worldwide. The entire box office weekend was the worst weekend since December 9th, 2022, and one of the fourth worst weekends since theaters reopened following the pandemic in 2021.
The weekend’s one new “big” release, Lisa Frankenstein, took second place with $3.6 million. The movie skewed young and female, with 61% of the audience being female and 71% under 35. It got a B CinemaScore, so it may not have the best word of mouth to help it this coming weekend against Madame Web. It was the third-best opening for a movie written by Diablo Cody, behind Jennifer’s Body and Rikki and the Flash and slightly ahead of Tully.
The Beekeeper remained in third place with another $3.3 million, bringing it to $54.6 million domestically and $114.6 million worldwide and it’s currently the highest-grossing movie worldwide for 2024.
Holdouts Wonka and Migration rounded out the top 5, with Wonka now at $205.1 million domestically and $587.4 million worldwide and Migration at $235.5 million worldwide.
2021’s Dune returned to the top 10, ahead of the release of its sequel in a few weeks, taking 9th place with $1.6 million in 2,100 theaters.
The Per Theater average went to The Taste of Things, France’s selection for Best International Film that was not nominated, which made $43,350 in each of the 3 theaters it played in over the weekend.
