Battle at the Box Office 3/11/24

The Dragon Warrior took down the Kwitsatz Haderach this weekend at the box office but Dune: Part Two remained strong in second place.

Kung Fu Panda 4 took in $57.9 million over the weekend for first place.  It’s the second-highest opening in the franchise behind the original entry, which made $60.2 million in 2008.  It’s also the 8th best opening in the history of Dreamworks animation, between Monsters vs. Aliens and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.  Worldwide, the movie has made $81.6 million.

Dune: Part Two only dropped 44% from last weekend, which is a solid hold for a big blockbuster movie.  The movie made another $46.2 million domestically, bringing it to $157.2 million domestically and $369.6 million worldwide.  It’s still extremely close to Oppenheimer‘s weekend-to-weekend performance, although the recently crowned Best Picture winner was slightly ahead of where Dune is in its second weekend.

Imaginary opened in third place with $9.9 million, which exceeded expectations.  As far as Blumhouse openings, it’s on the lower end between The Lazarus Effect and The Gallows.  The movie has $11.1 million worldwide and a budget of around $13 million, so it should be able to break even or make some profit in the theatrical window.

Cabrini, the latest from Angel Studios, opened in fourth place with $7.1 million.  It’s nowhere close to last summer’s breakout Sound of Freedom but it was also above expectations.  Cabrini utilized Angel Studios’ “Pay it Forward” system, which they used with Sound of Freedom, where people could purchase tickets for others to use online.  The faith-based audience that mostly attended Cabrini gave it an “A” CinemaScore, so it could have some long legs at the box office.

Bob Marley: One Love rounded out the top 5 with another $4 million, bringing it to $89.3 million domestically and $160.5 million worldwide.

Further down the list, in 200 theaters, the Chinese film YOLO took 8th place with $830,000.  Based on its release in its home country, the movie has a worldwide total of $479.4 million and is the highest-grossing movie in the world so far for 2024.

The per-theater average went to Loves Lies Bleeding’s limited release in 5 theaters.  A24’s latest took in $33,493 in each of those 5 theaters over the weekend and it expands wide this coming weekend.
