Battle at the Box Office 3/25/24
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire easily took the top spot at the box office this past weekend, pulling in virtually the same amount as Ghostbusters: Afterlife opened to back in 2021.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire opened with $45 million domestically and $61.3 million worldwide. Afterlife opened to $44 million in 2021. 2016’s Ghostbusters opened to $46 million, so the last three entries in the Ghostbusters franchise have been incredibly consistent with their openings. Adjusted for inflation, Ghostbusters II has the highest opening in the franchise with $79.6 million. The CinemaScore was B+, which isn’t great for word of mouth and a strong hold going into this coming weekend, especially having to go against Godzilla x Kong.
Speaking of holding strong, Dune: Part Two continues to have incredible legs at the box office, dropping only 38% from last weekend and taking in another $17.6 million. It now has $233.3 million domestically and $575.5 million worldwide.
Kung Fu Panda 4 didn’t hold quite as well as Dune and slipped 45% from last weekend, dropping it to third with another $16 million, bringing it to $132.9 million domestically and $267.5 million worldwide, which puts it at #6 for 2024 for worldwide grosses.
Immaculate and Arthur the King rounded out the top 5. Immaculate, a new horror movie starring current “It girl” Sydney Sweeney, opened to $5.3 million.
Other horror movies were doing well this weekend, including Late Night with the Devil, which made $2.8 million in 1,034 theaters and took 6th place and Imaginary is still in the top 10 at 7th place with $2.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $23.6 million.
The Per Theater average went to Femme, which took in $17,277 in 1 theater over the weekend.
