Battle at the Box Office 4/1/24

This weekend, the team-up of Godzilla and Kong dominated the box office with an opening that was only slightly below what Dune: Part Two opened to earlier this year.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to $80 million, just below Dune: Part Two’s $82.5 million.  It’s the second-best opening for the Monsterverse behind 2014’s Godzilla and more than twice what Godzilla vs Kong opened to in 2021 (granted, that opening was highly impacted by the pandemic and the fact that it was on Max day and date with theaters).  Worldwide, Godzilla x Kong is already almost over $200 million and it’s currently the 7th highest-grossing movie worldwide for 2024 and should only go up from there.  The movie got a solid A- CinemaScore, so word of mouth should be strong this coming weekend, but we’ll have to see if it has a monster-sized drop-off in week 2.

Speaking of monster-sized drops, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had a pretty massive 65% drop from last weekend, dropping to second with $15.6 million.  That takes it to $73.3 million domestically so far and $108.4 million worldwide.  Tracking-wise, it’s down about $9 million from where Ghostbusters: Afterlife was in its second weekend.

Dune: Part Two continues to hold well, dropping only another 36% from last weekend and making another $11.3 million.  It now has $252.6 million domestically and $626.3 million worldwide.

Kung Fu Panda 4 and Immaculate rounded out the top 5.  Immaculate had a strong hold for a horror movie, only dropping 39% from last weekend and taking 5th place with $3.2 million.  It does have direct competition this coming weekend from The First Omen.

The Indian comedy Tillu Square took sixth place with $2.5 million in only 450 theaters.  Another Indian movie, Crew, came in 9th place with $1.7 million in 486 theaters.

Godzilla x Kong took the Per Theater average over the weekend along with the #1 spot, taking in $20,722 in the 3,861 theaters it played in over the weekend.
