Musical Montage: Bonnie Raitt “Have a Heart”
Considered the worst movie in Denzel Washington’s illustrious career, Denzel was paired with Bob Hoskins for the 1990 comedy Heart Condition, which featured the song “Have a Heart” from Bonnie Raitt on the soundtrack. Hoskins played a racist cop who is constantly at odds with lawyer Napoleon Stone (Washington), who is murdered in what appears to be a car accident. When Hoskins’ cop Jack Moony has a heart attack from his terrible lifestyle choices, he discovers that he received a heart transplant and the heart was Stone’s. Stone appears to Moony as a ghost and seeks help solving his murder. The movie was a box office bomb and received terrible reviews from critics. Bonnie Raitt’s song “Have a Heart” appeared on Raitt’s album Nick of Time a year prior in 1989, a massive success for Raitt. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart, sold five million copies, and earned 3 Grammy awards. “Thing Called Love” was the album’s big single, which was featured prominently on MTV and featured Dennis Quaid. “Have a Heart” reached #49 on the Billboard charts and received a music video tied into Heart Condition, featuring clips from the movie.
