Everything Action Theater: The Mummy (1932)
1999’s The Mummy turned 25 this week, but you can go back even further and watch 1932’s The Mummy in the latest Everything Action Theater. Starring Boris Karloff as Imhotep, the basic premise is the same as the blockbuster 1999 version, with Imhotep being resurrected in “modern” times and trying to bring back his lost love, Anck-su-namun, by sacrificing a woman he believes is the reincarnation of Anck-su-namun, Helen Grosvenor (Zita Grosvenor). The Mummy was the fourth movie released during Universal’s Classic Monsters heydey and wasn’t quite as successful as Dracula or Frankenstein but was still a massive hit. Karloff’s Mummy is still a horror icon and the first thing that comes to most people’s minds if you are picturing a classic movie mummy. Universal followed up The Mummy with sequels but didn’t focus on Imhotep; instead, a new mummy, Kharis, played by Lon Chaney Jr., was featured. You can watch The Mummy in full thanks to YouTube, and be sure to check out this week’s Everything Actioncast, where we’ll dive into the 1999 movie to celebrate its anniversary.
