Everything Action Theater: The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
If you’re looking to pay tribute to the late Roger Corman, who passed away last week, you can watch what many consider one of his best movies, 1964’s The Masque of the Red Death, in the latest Everything Action Theater. Starring Vincent Price, the movie is an adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe story of the same name while also incorporating elements from another Poe story, “Hop-Frog.” The Masque of the Red Death was the seventh movie in Corman’s eight film series of Poe adaptations, including House of Usher and The Pit and The Pendulum, both of which also starred Price. Corman said that The Masque of the Red Death is one of his favorite movies, and he oversaw a remake of the film in 1989, starring Patrick Macnee and Adrian Paul. The original movie has been referenced in music, especially metal, by bands like Theatre of Tragedy, Bell Witch, and Entombed, and it also received a comic book adaptation and novelization.
