Battle at the Box Office 6/24/24

Inside Out 2 continues to dominate the box office, having a historically massive second weekend with over $100 million.

Inside Out 2 took in $101.2 million over the weekend, dropping only 34% from last week’s already huge opening weekend.  It is only the seventh movie in history to make over $100 million in its second weekend, and it’s the biggest second-weekend opening since Barbie.  Inside Out 2 has over $356 million domestically and over $725 million worldwide.  Its performance is almost identical to Barbie‘s; if it keeps up this pace, it could top over $600 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide.  It has passed Dune Part 2 to become the highest-grossing film both domestically and worldwide in 2024.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die also held strong, although it was still a distant second to Inside Out 2. Bad Boys took in another $18.8 million, bringing its total to $147 million domestically and $289.2 million worldwide.

The Bikeriders opened in third place with $9.6 million.  It’s the first movie for director Jeff Nichols to open wide, as most of his movies, like Loving or Take Shelter, have had limited releases that either built to a wider release or just stayed limited.  For Tom Hardy, it’s slightly below the opening of Lawless.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Garfield Movie rounded out the top 5.

Further down the list, The Exorcism opened in seventh place with $2.4 million, the best opening for smaller distributor Vertical Entertainment. Thelma opened in eighth place with $2.3 million, and Rite Here Rite Now opened in tenth place with $1.5 million.

Yorgos Lathimos’ latest movie, Kinds of Kindness, took the per-theater average for the weekend with a massive $75,458 in each of the 5 theaters it played in. That is the best per-Theater average of 2024, taking the top spot away from French Oscar contender The Taste of Things.
