Battle at the Box Office 7/22/24
Twisters cycloned its way into a massive opening weekend, far exceeding even the highest projections.
Twisters opened to $80.5 million, increasing with each new estimate from Saturday through Sunday. The movie got an A- CinemaScore and a 92% Audience Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so word of mouth seems like it will be solid heading into its second weekend, even though it faces Deadpool & Wolverine. If you adjust for inflation, Twisters is only about $2 million behind the original Twister, which would have made around $82 million in today’s dollars with a $41 million opening back in 1996. Worldwide, Twisters has $123.9 million so far. A significant chunk of Twisters‘ box office came from 4DX theaters, which seems like the perfect venue to experience all of Twisters storm action.
Universal also had the #2 movie at the box office, with Despicable Me 4 dropping to second but making another $24.4 million. It now has $260 million domestically and $577 million worldwide. It’s currently between Sing and the original Despicable Me worldwide for Illumination.
Inside Out 2 stayed in third place with another $12.8 million, bringing it to $596.4 million domestically and $1.4 billion worldwide. It’s currently the 14th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide and the highest-grossing film in Pixar’s history, topping Incredibles 2, which had $1.24 billion worldwide.
Longlegs and A Quiet Place: Day One rounded out the top five, both films dropping less than 50% from last weekend. For Longlegs, that’s an incredibly solid second-week drop, and the movie made another $11.9 million, bringing it to $44.9 million for two weeks out. The hype seems to be strong despite some mixed audience reactions on the opening weekend. A Quiet Place: Day One now has $127.8 million domestically and $241.6 million worldwide.
Fly Me to the Moon saw a steep drop normally reserved for horror movies and not romantic comedies. It fell 65% from last weekend and took sixth place with $3.3 million. Two weeks out, it has $16.3 million domestically.
The Bikeriders returned to the top 10 in 8th place, increasing by 81% from last weekend and making $722,370. They now have $21.2 million domestically.
Oddity opened outside of the top 10, which made $562,333 in 790 theaters.
The per-Theater average went to Twisters, which earned $19,754 in each of the 4,151 theaters it played in over the weekend.
