Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week; it’s the News Shotgun.
Robert and Rebecca Rodriguez reimagining Zorro: The Rodriguezes are looking to put a modern spin on Zorro with a new project being developed for CBS. Robert Rodriguez and his sister Rebecca Rodriguez are creating a contemporary take on the pulp hero that sees a young Latinx woman discover that her father was the legendary Zorro, and she takes up his mantle to defend her community in Austin, TX, from those trying to exploit and harm them. Multiple modern Zorro projects are either already released or in development, with a French series available on Paramount+ and a Spanish series on Prime Video. Wilmer Valderrama has also been trying to develop a Zorro series for Disney+ since 2021.
The Conjuring: Last Rites adds two new cast members: The final mainline Conjuring movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites, has added two new cast members with Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson. It’s unclear who they will play, but they join Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who return to star as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, is directing this final chapter in the Conjuring series.
Spider-Noir adds eight new cast members: The Nicolas Cage starring live-action expansion of the Spider-Verse added eight recurring actors this week with Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott Macarthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice And Amanda Schull. There are no details about who any of them are playing. Cage is playing Spider-Man Noir, and Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, and Jack Huston were previously cast in the series. It will be an MGM+/Prime Video series with Lord and Miller executive producing.
Netflix drama The Waterfront adds six cast members: Netflix has cast six actors for their upcoming drama series, The Waterfront, created by Kevin Willamson. Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Danielle Campbell, Rafael L. Silva, Gerardo Celasco, Humberly González, Michael Gaston, and Brady Hepner joined the cast, and Holt McCallany and Maria Bello were previously cast as the main stars of the series. The show follows the Buckley family “as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.” The series will be eight episodes and is inspired by actual events.
John Cena is starring in the movie Matchbox: John Cena is going from Fast and the Furious to another car-centric property, and he signed on to star in the upcoming Matchbox movie. Based on the line of toy cars from Mattel, there’s no word on the movie’s plot. Sam Hargrave, who directed Extraction and Extraction II, directed the movie, and it’s an Apple Original Film, so it will eventually appear on Apple TV+. However, it’s unclear if this will go to theaters and then streaming or be a streaming exclusive.
Time Bandits canceled at Apple TV+: Speaking of Apple TV+, the streamer has canceled Time Bandits after 1 season. The show was created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Waititi, and it is based on the Terry Gilliam movie. It starred Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Charlyne Yi, Rune Temte, Rachel House, Kiera Thompson, James Dryden, Felicity Ward, Francesca Mills and Imaan Hadchiti. It followed a group of thieves who can travel across time and space to steal valuables from different periods—the first season debuted its final episode on August 21st.
