Battle at the Box Office 12/9/24
Moana 2 continued dominating the box office over the past weekend while a slew of new releases found their way into the top 10.
Moana 2 took in another $51.2 million, dropping a fairly steep 63% from last weekend but still the dominant film playing in theaters. The movie has made $299.3 million domestically and $599.3 million worldwide, making it the 5th highest-grossing film both domestically and worldwide for 2024 behind Wicked domestically and Dune: Part 2 worldwide.
Wicked remained in second place with another $36.4 million, taking it to $322.1 million domestically and $457.5 million worldwide.
Gladiator II also remained in the same position as last week, taking third place with another $12.4 million, taking it to $132.7 million domestically. Worldwide, it has $368.4 million and it’s currently director Ridley Scott’s fourth biggest movie both domestically and worldwide.
The top 5 was rounded out by Red One (which was just announced to be hitting Prime Video this Thursday) and an anniversary release of Interstellar. Red One made another $7 million, taking it to $85.7 million domestically and $164.5 million worldwide. Interstellar brought in $4.4 million, which brought its original domestic total up to $192.4 million.
The rest of the top 10 was mostly newly released smaller films or special events. A24’s Y2K opened in 8th place with $2.1 million while the Frank Grillo action/horror movie Werewolves took 10th place with just over $1 million. In 11th place was the Jude Law starring thriller The Order, which made $878,000.
Interstellar’s re-release was also the best Per Theater average for the week, bringing in $26,818 in each of the 165 theaters it was playing in.
