Battle at the Box Office 1/13/25
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera pulled a heist on the weekend box office and stole the top spot from Mufasa and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera made $15 million for its opening weekend, which is almost identical to what 2018’s Den of Thieves opened to. For a sequel 7 years removed from the first movie, that’s a fantastic hold and shows that the series has maintained a solid and dedicated fanbase. The movie got a B+ CinemaScore, so word of mouth should be reasonably solid heading into its second weekend, but we’ll have to see how much it drops and if this was a front-loaded debut. Worldwide, the movie has just over $20 million so far.
Mufasa: The Lion King dropped to second place with $13.2 million, dropping 44% from last weekend. Mufasa and Sonic had slightly more significant drop-offs than prior weekends as the holidays are in the rearview and kids are heading back to school. Mufasa has a domestic total of $188.7 million and a worldwide gross of $541.2 million, making it the 9th highest-grossing film of 2024.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dropped to third with another $11.3 million, bringing it to $204.8 million domestically and $385.1 million worldwide.
Nosferatu and Moana 2 rounded out the top five, with Nosferatu making another $6.8 million and Moana 2 making another $6.5 million. Nosferatu has $135.4 million worldwide, while Moana 2 is just $10 million shy of breaking the billion-dollar mark. It’s currently the third highest-grossing film worldwide in 2024, behind fellow Disney projects Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Further down the list, Game Changer from India opened with just over $2 million in 805 theaters, while The Last Showgirl expanded into 870 theaters and made $1.5 million.
Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic, absolutely bombed in its North American wide release, making barely over $1 million in 1,291 theaters, about $824 per theater for the weekend. The budget was an insane $110 million, mainly because a Planet of the Apes-level CGI monkey portrays Wiliams. Someone high up in Paramount must be a huge Robbie Williams fan, but most people in the US have no clue who he is, and even in the UK, where most of his popularity has been garnered, the movie isn’t doing particularly well.
The best Per Theater average went to Extremely Unique Dynamic, an indie comedy that made $38,207 in the one theater it was playing in over the weekend.
