When the 1986 classic Stand By Me came out, Ben E. King’s iconic song, which gives the movie its title, saw a massive resurgence, jumping back into the Billboard charts and the man himself even starred in a music video featuring cast members River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton.

One of the many cinematic appearances from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (or at least one of the members) over the year, the band appeared and performed in the cult 80s skateboarding movie Thrashin, which starred a young Josh Brolin as an amateur skateboarder who dreams of becoming a professional downhill racer.

Hailing from the UK, singer/songwriter Chesney Hawkes started his career at age 19 and had his biggest hit, “The One and Only”, from a movie he co-starred in alongside the legendary Roger Daltrey, Buddy’s Song, and it also later appeared in films like Doc Hollywood, Moon and Source Code.

Apparently a favorite song of director Michael Mann, “Heartbeat” by the short-lived band Red 7 was not only in an episode of Miami Vice but also as the end credits song for the first cinematic adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, Manhunter, in 1986.

Things got somewhat weird in the fifth and final Dirty Harry movie, The Dead Pool, which featured, among other things, an over the top segment where a pre-famous Jim Carrey lip-syncs to “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N Roses for a music video/slasher movie directed by Liam Neeson.

Nowadays most people think of Peter Jackson when you mention The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit but back in the 70s there was the Rankin & Bass directed adaptation of The Hobbit which, along with songs taken directly from the Tolkien novel, had the original song from Glenn Yarbrough “The Greatest Adventure (The Ballad of The Hobbit)”

Celebrating its 40th-anniversary this past weekend, John Landis’ cult classic The Blues Brothers is jam-packed with music not only from the titular duo of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi but legens like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, James Brown and John Lee Hooker.

An eternal 90s jam, Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper” has long outlasted the movie it was included on the soundtrack for, 1994’s Robert Altman comedy Ready to Wear aka Pret-a-Porter.

1994’s live-action version of The Flintstones launched an all-out promotional assault that helped it become a massive worldwide hit and one part of that was The B-52s performing a new version of the iconic TV theme, “(Meet) the Flintstones”, for the movie’s soundtrack.

Huey Lewis starred in the competitive karaoke movie Duets back in 2000 as shyster Ricky Dean. Reunited with his estranged daughter (Gwyneth Paltrow), the duo travels the country and eventually compete against other pairs of karaoke singers for a shot at $5,000 in Omaha.

The title song for the 1992 action thriller Deep Cover, starring Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum, “Deep Cover” was the first solo single for Dr. Dre and the first-ever appearance of Snoop Dogg on a record.
