Musical Montage: Grace Jones “Storm”
Warner Bros. were most likely looking for a new Bond style franchise when they rebooted the classic 60’s British spy show The Avengers but pretty much everything went wrong. Their director wanted to make something a bit more unusual and artsy than the typical big budget blockbuster and WB responded by chopping the film into oblivion, taking out over 40 minutes that contained crucial bits like plot and character development. Even getting former Bond Sean Connery as the villain didn’t help, despite the fact that at one point, he’s wearing a giant teddy bear costume. The only truly Bondesque thing about The Avengers is the credits song by former Bond girl Grace Jones, called “Storm”, which has a Shirley Bassey style feel to it and is filled with metaphors about the weather.
