Battle at the Box Office 4/14/25

A Minecraft Movie continued its domination of the box office with a massive second weekend that held off all the new movies that hit theaters.

A Minecraft Movie took in another $78.5 million in its second weekend, taking it to $278.8 million domestically and just under $550 million worldwide.  It’s now the highest-grossing film domestically for 2025 and the second-highest-grossing film worldwide for the year, behind the juggernaut of Nezha 2, which grossed just under $2 billion.

The King of Kings was second place with $19.3 million. It’s Angel Studios’ second-best opening ever, just $300,000 behind what Sound of Freedom opened to back in summer 2023. It seems perfectly primed to capitalize on the upcoming Easter weekend, and we’ll have to see how well it holds up.

The Amateur opened in third place with $15 million.  That’s on par with the opening of the similar American Assassin, which opened to $14.8 million in 2017.  Budget-wise, they are also similar with American Assassin costing slightly more and made $68 million worldwide.  The movie has a B+ CinemaScore, which isn’t particularly great, so we’ll have to see what kind of drop it has in the coming weekend.  It’s the fifth highest-grossing film for Rami Malek in a lead role, with No Time to Die being his biggest opening.

Warfare and Drop rounded out the top 5, both opening under $10 million with $8.3 million and $7.5 million, respectively.  Warfare got an A- CinemaScore, so we’ll have to see how word of mouth affects the upcoming weekends.  Warfare is Alex Garland’s third-largest opening as a director behind Civil War and Annihilation.  For Drop director Christopher Landon, it’s his fourth best opening, with Happy Death Day being his best at $26 million.

The final chapter of Fathom Events’ The Chosen: The Last Supper opened in sixth place with $6 million.  Each part has grossed less than the previous entry, with Part 1 being the highest-grossing entry in The Chosen series of theatrical releases domestically and worldwide.

The best per-theater average went to The Teacher, which made $20,032 in the one theater it played in over the weekend.
