Moana topped the box office this past weekend, but it’s definitely not the result Disney was looking for.
Moana opened to $43 million domestically, which is only about $1 million more than Snow White’s disastrous opening last year. The movie made a worldwide total of $95 million, and analysts are already predicting it could cost Disney $125-150 million. Moana cost an insane $250 million to make, which would mean it would need at least $500 million worldwide to break even, and, given this weekend’s performance, it seems extremely unlikely; it could lose even more depending on the final result. The movie did get an A- CinemaScore, so we’ll have to see whether families keep coming out to theaters in the next few weeks or if word of mouth will tell audiences they’re better off watching the animated original on Disney+. For The Rock, this opening ranks 11th for him overall, between San Andreas and Rampage.
Moana’s direct competition, Minions & Monsters, dropped a solid 43% from last weekend, making another $21.1 million and taking it to $108.9 million domestically and $281 million worldwide.
The other major family movie option, Toy Story 5, dropped to third with $18.5 million. It now has $403.7 million domestically and $881.3 million worldwide. It’s the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 globally, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael, the latter of which just crossed $1 billion at the global box office.
Evil Dead Burn and Young Washington rounded out the top 5. Evil Dead Burn opened to $13.7 million, which is about $10 million below the two most recent entries in the franchise, the 2013 remake and 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which opened to $24.5 million. The movie got a B CinemaScore, which is good for a horror film. Young Washington dropped 64% from last weekend, losing the boost it gained from the Fourth of July holiday, and took in $6.9 million for the weekend. It’s now at $33.5 million domestically.
Expanding into 1,610 theaters, The Invite moved up into sixth place with $5.7 million. It has $7.3 million domestically and $9.9 million worldwide.
Opening outside the top 10, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass grossed less than $1 million in 1,000 theaters, finishing 11th.
