  • Injustice 2 gets a release date: The next entry in NetherRealm’s DC Comics fighting game series will arrive May 16 this year.  New characters include Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, Blue Beetle, Deadshot and Atrocitus.
  • Keegan Michael-Key joins The Predator: Shane Black’s new Predator movie got some comedic chops this week as Keegan Michael-Key joined the cast as a character who joins up with Marines played by Boyd Holbrook and Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes.  Olivia Munn has also been cast as a scientist and it may feature the titular intergalactic hunter stalking the suburbs.
  • New Netflix sitcom announced: As part of their doubling down on original content, Netflix has a new comedy show coming called Santa Clarita Diet starring Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore that was previously announced with a very vague premise that Barrymore’s character is going through a dramatic change but this week it was revealed that Barrymore’s character Sheila has died and become a zombie and her husband (Olyphant) has to help her keep her hunger in check to hide this from their neighbors and their clients, as they run a real estate company together.  All episodes drop February 3rd.
  • The CW rebooting Charmed: The 90’s WB show featuring the magical Halliwell sisters is getting rebooted on The CW with a new take that is set in 1976.  It will tie into the original series in some fashion but there weren’t any specific details.  The team behind Jane the Virgin will be handling this show as well.
  • Slender Man movie gets a director: Screen Gems is developing a horror movie based on creepypasta character Slender Man and have hired Sylvain White, who previously directed The Losers and Stomp the Yard, will direct the movie, which doesn’t really have any plot details at this time.
  • Kevin Smith directing Batman episode of The Goldbergs: One of the many great things about The Goldbergs is their homage episodes, where they dedicate an entire episode to a specific movie and, in addition to a Karate Kid episode later this year, there will also be a Batman ’89 episode directed by Kevin Smith.  The episode will be entitled The Dynamic Duo but there are no specifics.
  • Cult of Chucky starts shooting this week: The next entry in the Child’s Play series has begun filming, Cult of Chucky.  The new movie follows Nica (Fiona Dourif), the protagonist of Curse of Chucky, who is in an asylum after the events of that film and believing she went crazy and killed her family.  The therapists attempt to help her by bringing in a Good Guy doll that, of course, turns out to be Chucky and he starts rampaging around the asylum.  Jennifer Tilly is returning as Tiffany and Alex Vincent is returning as original Child’s Play protagonist Andy Barclay, who is trying to get to the asylum to stop Chucky and save Nica.
  • JCVD and Dolph Lundgren teaming up for a new action movie: The Universal Soldier co-stars are reuniting for a new action movie called Black Water where the duo teams up to escape from a CIA black site that is actually a submarine.
  • Marvel announces Deadpool vs Punisher comic series: The former Thunderbolts teammates will battle each other starting in April with a new comic series announced by Marvel.  Fred Van Lente will write and Pepe Perez will provide the art and the story follows The Punisher targeting a character nicknamed “The Bank”, who is one of Deadpool’s oldest friends, so the Merc with a Mouth comes to his defense against Frank Castle.
  • Alien: Covenant getting a VR experience: An experience for all current tethered VR platforms (Oculus, Vive, Playstation VR) is coming for Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, from the same company that created The Martian VR experience in 2015.  The press release for the experience says that “Viewers will discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments and a story where every decision could mean the difference between life and death.”  It’s out this year, most likely around the time of the film in May.
  • New Spider-Man animated series will co-star Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen: Ultimate Spider-Man is ending on Disney XD and new Spider-Man cartoon will take it’s place, possibly more in line with the MCU version but Peter Parker will be joined by Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, based on merchandise promo shots that show all three together.  Venom also appears on the merchandise, so he should be showing up on this new show as well.  This new Spider-Man cartoon will be arriving sometime later this year.
