Battle at the Box Office 6/5
Although it’s the lowest opening of the DCEU movies, Wonder Woman was still a massive hit with over $100 million for its first weekend and, more importantly, it’s the first critically acclaimed movie for that cinematic universe.
Wonder Woman made $100.5 million, putting it between X-Men: The Last Stand and Iron Man in the list of all comic book adaptations and 16th overall for the genre and it’s the highest ever opening for a female directed film. It was also the 6th best opening for a June release. The closest prior DCEU movie is Man of Steel, which opened to $116 million in 2013. With it’s international gross, Wonder Woman has made $233 million total so far.
Opening in second with about a quarter the take of Wonder Woman, Captain Underpants took in $23.5 million, which puts it between Rise of the Guardians and Turbo for Dreamworks and it’s less than half of what The Boss Baby made earlier this year when it opened.
Pirates of the Caribbean suffered a pretty massive 65% drop from last weekend, falling from first to third with $21.6 million. It’s cleaning up internationally however and it’s worldwide take is already over $500 million.
Guardians Vol. 2 and Baywatch rounded out the top 5.
Nothing else really shifted too much in the bottom half of the list with the exception of The Fate of the Furious, which finally fell out of the top 10 in it’s 8th week of release, going down to 15th. Worldwide, it’s made over $1.2 billion and is the 11th highest grossing film of all time.
