Musical Montage: Dan Hartman “Get Outta Town”
Dan Hartman had massive success with his single “I Can Dream About You” from both the Streets of Fire soundtrack and his album, also called I Can Dream About You. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to match that success for his main contribution to the Fletch soundtrack, “Get Outta Town”. While “I Can Dream About You” hit the top 10 in both the US and UK and two of the follow-up singles were big hits as well, “Get Outta Town” failed to chart except for a single week just barely making it into the Top 100 in the UK at #99. It was especially strange in the UK that nothing happened with the single because “I Can Dream About You” had gotten a re-release and was back in the top 10 only a month before. The song did get a big music video tie-in to Fletch, with Chevy Chase appearing as Fletch, who seeks out a fortune teller played by Hartman, who continuously tells him to do what the song’s title says and “Get Outta Town”. Hartman contributed another song to the Fletch soundtrack, “Name of the Game”, which came off the I Can Dream About You album, but that failed to do much as well.
