EA Commentary: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
As Chinese New Year happens this coming weekend (1/25), the Everything Action crew is celebrating as we have for many years with a kung-fu/martial arts movie and this year Zach and Chris watched the classic Shaw Brothers movie The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Starring Gordon Liu as San Te, he is a student who is drawn into a resistance against the tyrannical Manchu government. When his family and home are destroyed, he flees to the Shaolin temple to learn kung-fu and get revenge. San Te learns that the path to kung-fu mastery is long and challenging, as there are 35 chambers or challenges that he must master, including balancing across logs floating on water, mastery of various weapons, training his eyesight and more. It’s considered a classic of the genre and, among other things, it is one of the major inspirations to the Wu-Tang Clan, who paid homage to it with the title of their first album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The movie is available to stream on Amazon (along with what seems like every Shaw Brothers movie) and you can sync it up with the commentary below and watch along with Everything Action.
