Everything Action Theater: Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle
If you’re looking for something different to watch on this Star Wars Day, you can check out the 1999 special Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle in the latest Everything Action Theater. Although it has a similar title and came out the same year as The Phantom Menace, Thumb Wars is a parody of A New Hope and came from the mind of Steve Oedekerk. Oedekerk previously directed Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and a few years after Thumb Wars he would direct Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Thumb Wars, as the title suggests, features characters that are literally thumbs with facial features superimposed onto them. Vaguely following the plot of A New Hope, Loke Groundrunner leaves his home planet with Thumb Master Oobedoob Scoobi-Doobi Benubi and smugglers Hand Duet and Crunchy to join the battle against the evil Thumbpire and Black Helmet Man. The special originally aired on UPN (remember that network?) in May of 1999 and later aired on Cartoon Network in 2008 to help promote The Clones Wars animated series. The series is full of ridiculous visual gags, pop culture references, and puns and you can watch the entire thing below.
