Musical Montage: DJ Snake and Lil John “Turn Down for What”
A decade before they would become Academy Award winners for Everything, Everywhere All at Once, The Daniels aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed the over the top insanity that is the music video for “Turn Down for What”. “Turn Down for What” debuted on December 18th, 2013 and became a massive hit, going 8x platinum and earning over 1 billion views on the official music video. Rolling Stone declared it the second-best song of 2014 and it peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts. It also became a meme and viral sensation, with the song’s title phrase being used in numerous images around the internet and the song appearing in several TV shows and movies. For the music video, The Daniels unleashed their trademark absurdist style, with Daniel Kwan also starring as the man who is psychotically driven to hump everything in sight, with dancer and actress Sunita Mani co-starring. The video won The Daniels a Best Direction MTV VMAs in 2014, only slightly less prestigious than their numerous Oscar wins. You can check out the video for “Turn Down for What” below.
