Musical Montage: Dua Lipa “Dance the Night”
One of the most anticipated summer weekends is imminent when Oppenheimer and Barbie open this coming Friday. While it remains to be seen who will come out on top at the box office, one place Barbie definitely has an advantage is its soundtrack, which includes “Dance the Night” from Mermaid Barbie herself, Dua Lipa. The first new song since Lipa’s Future Nostalgia released in 2020, the song is a disco track that will feature in the big disco dance party that has been featured in Barbie trailers. Director Greta Gerwig sent a playlist to producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt of songs she wanted the disco track to sound like and they created the backing track for “Dance the Night”. The song reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 after it was released in May this year and #20 on the UK Singles chart. For the music video, Dua Lipa arrives on the video set, which is being directed by Gerwig in the video in a cameo but was actually directed by Shane Drake and Brendan Walter. There is tons of pink and iconic Barbie imagery, including her Corvette, along with clips from the movie. You can check out the video below.
